Bob has been there since the first WAVA Championship in Toronto some 33 years ago. The WMA made Bob an Honorary Life Member for his work on the executive of the WAVA/WMA. Bob wrote the original constitution and rules, of the World Association of Veteran’s Athletics, now known as WMA, and held the post of secretary of WAVA. His legal knowledge was invaluable in negotiations with IGAL and the IAAF in the 1980’s.
His forte was race walking which he excelled at. He competed at US nationals every year and almost never missed a world master’s championship. Bob race walked internationally in 2008 at the WMA Indoor Championships in Clermont-Ferrand, France and most recently at the NCCWMA Regional championships in Clermont, Florida. His walking style sometimes brought him to a steep angle near the end of a long race but he never gave up and was always highly competitive in his sport. Bob loved to take on track as well as political issues with zest.
He not only enjoyed race walking but could run a mean 200, 400, 800 meter and relay race.
All those who knew Bob admired his athletic knowledge, feisty manner and longevity in the sport. The executive of the WMA and all members of the Masters family who know Bob will miss him in their own way.
The photo attached shows Bob running a leg of the M70 relay at the 2004 NCCWMA championships in Dorado, Puerto Rico.
