Welcome to 2018 - the year of WMA Track & Field Championships in Malaga
As the curtains come down on 2017, the year in which Seoul, Korea became the first Asian Affiliate to host a very successful Indoor Championships, it was also a sad year as we said goodbye to two prominent members who did an immense amount of work for many years to promote and organise our beloved sport in their Region.
Hannes Booysen died peacefully aged 95 in September. He became the African Representative in 1985, a position he served until September 2006 when he handed responsibilities over to Jean Hedley Edmond. He tried tremendously hard to organise an African Masters Annual Track & Field Championships and he helped to form Masters Associations in some countries there.
Jim Tobin, the well known New Zealand competitor and Official, has died at age 85. He was a prominent member of our Non Stadia Committee from 1997 until 2009. He was awarded a WMA Honorary Bronze Pin in 2007 for his services to Masters athletics. He also served as Vice-President of Oceania Masters Athletics from 1992-96 before becoming President in 1996-2002. He and his wife Helen made a huge contribution to our sport. We shall miss them.
Wishing all Affiliates, Athletes, Officials and all those involved in our sport a happy and healthy New Year and we look forward to meeting you in Malaga, Spain.
